The Small Business Observer Beware of the Ego
By: John Plante

First off most entrepreneurs have lack of self esteem, that is why they have to manifest something larger then themselves in order to feel better and to get noticed. Yep lack of self esteem is right in there!

Lack of self esteem whether it takes a dominate or submissive stance is equally dangerous in any organization- especially at the top.

You start off with the desire to "Get somewhere" whatever that means - in Entrepreneurial language- I'm not good enough as Iam and where i am at.

Next you start to create something and through your driven behaviour and passion to fill that personal void you attract others to champion your cause...little do they know that you are trying to fill a void- they take it at face value as being what it is- a passionate dream! A winning experience! Tell me who doesn't want to be part of that!

Your fame starts to blossom with financial success, Your inner you if not originally a faint flicker has completely been dampened by the egos desire to be - again more than Iam.

People are vibrating from the instant success, their faith grows in you, they stake financial investment on it!

But of course its not enough! you want more, you push harder, you start to burn people out around you, that's ok you find new ones- you keep pushing- your desire to "get somewhere" pushes you to forgo all else; self, health, family, happiness, recreation, relationships!

That's ok you have now surrounded yourself what I call "toys and noise" - you know all the technology you can go online and purchase- to magnify your so called "success" - the surface relationships that pat you on the back so as to reinforce your egos image- does it get any better, you have surrounded yourself with people who are in love with the image of you! That should fill the void!

Ah now we are at the top of the mountain ready to take the reality trip down - first you start off with all four wheels in tact, then as you start to gain momentum, you start to really wobble and tip!

The metaphor in real life these are good people that originally believed in you that are gone! They have left- no longer carrying the torch, no longer satisfied standing at the water cooler complaining how things have changed for the worse, no longer fulfilling for them to feed on each other as a result of the shallow culture you have created- gone to find another noble cause to support.

Ah then the other key relationships- Family- yes strangers to you now- people you have pushed aside to gain greater fame, more toys, more noise- so that you can "get somewhere."

The final straw the Client relationship- yes you even out grew that! Now a second and yes a third wheel have come off your bus- people jumping out as you plummet down the mountain of success.

Your cart starts tip, that's ok I still have enough residual energy left from the original climb to put on one final valiant effort to appear successful- Perhaps a new car will do it, i know a new suit perhaps? um let me see- I know a team building event- like a Night out! or better still a trip for the estranged family- lord knows a trip somewhere exotic will certainly show i still have it!

Throwing good money after bad trying desperately to hold on to any fragment of perceived success, until the final death role- the bus turns over completely- all is lost....

You awake sometime after (If you are lucky) first in denial that you were driving that bus full of good people, then after everyone jumped off, you drove it over that cliff. Who me? nope was somebody else. Ah but someone - several someone's know the truth (hopefully one of them is you)- your faced with the truth of your demise- and if your lucky you wont let history repeat itself...

A story from a real Entrepreneur that finally woke up and realized it was never about me- it was about using the talents I was given to help other people succeed.

Stay tuned - round two from an "e" that learned and is on the way back up the mountain for all the right reasons.
